The Weight You Can’t See

On invisible work

Let me start here: this one’s going to read a little differently.

It’s not polished. It’s not tidy. It’s not one of those luminous caregiver essays where the suffering makes sense in the end. This is messier. It’s about the parts we don’t talk about—when the work is invisible, but the cost is not.

February 15th. Two weeks before Ramadan. The oncologist’s words hung in the fluorescent air: acute myeloid leukemia. Shabbir grew quiet, started fidgeting in his chair, his voice turning gruff when the doctor asked if we had questions. That’s the moment the clock started—not just the medical timeline, but a subtler one: the countdown to my own collapse. I didn’t see it then. I just moved into management mode, into the role I’ve trained for my whole adult life without realizing it.

Then Ramadan came. And with it, a schedule already tilted toward intensity: fasting from dawn to dusk, late nights of prayer, early mornings of suhoor. But this time, layered over that sacred rhythm was a new, insistent tempo: hospital runs, oncology appointments, managing side effects, translating medical language, holding Shabbir’s fears, holding my own at bay.

By day, I fasted and parented. By night, I prayed and shuttled. I poured myself out in both places, hoping the sum total of my care would be enough to sustain everyone.

It wasn’t.

Friends and family reached out. They texted, called, asked how I was doing. I answered quickly—always politely, always concisely. “I’m fine.” “We’re managing.” “Thanks for asking.” It was easier to move past the moment than to enter it. I didn’t have the emotional reserves to translate what I was carrying to people who had never borne a parallel weight. I wasn’t a lesson. I wasn’t a story someone else needed to learn from.

Except once.

A woman I’d only spoken to a handful of times—an acquaintance from past gatherings, warm and grounded, someone I knew had once walked through fire caring for her gravely ill son—texted to ask how I was doing.

And without preamble, I typed back: “Baltimore feels like a prison.”

Something about finally naming it cracked something open in me.

Ambition, Interrupted (But Not Silenced)

There’s a verse in the Qur’an that speaks of those who give of themselves seeking only the face of God. It’s a high ideal, a sacred posture: to serve without expectation, to labor in secret, to exhaust yourself for others and call it worship.

For many women, that’s not a metaphor, it’s a mirror. It’s how we live. We are trained to disappear gracefully into usefulness. To believe that to be needed is the highest form of being.

I wrote once, half in jest, about Ambition, Interrupted—about what it feels like to keep trying to work, to write, to think in full sentences while juggling the logistics of a life suddenly fractured. I used humor to soften it, but what I felt wasn’t funny. It was fear. A low, steady panic that I was vanishing. That the parts of me I had built—the thinker, the writer, the woman with outlines and deadlines and sentences sharp enough to survive—were dissolving under the weight of being everyone’s anchor.

Shabbir needed me, not occasionally or in passing, but with a kind of emotional intensity that eclipsed everything else. He wanted to talk about life and death, about meaning and memory, about what we had built and what we might still become. What he craved wasn’t distraction, but undivided presence. And I wanted to give it to him. I believed, with all my heart, that love, in its truest form, is not just a feeling but a kind of radical availability.

But I also wanted to finish the paper I’d started. To feel the cool clarity of being alone with my thoughts. To not be needed, just for an hour.

And that made me feel selfish in ways I still don’t know how to name.

Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever again feel whole in a room by myself.

Transplant Week: The Splitting Point

When the transplant came, I broke into three.

Zaynab was the donor. Shabbir, the recipient. I was the bridge, the buffer, the quiet mechanism holding the ends together.

In the days leading up to the procedure, Zaynab was almost casual about it. “I don’t know why people keep calling me brave,” she’d say with a shrug. “I’ll be asleep the whole time.”

On the morning of the harvest, she got dressed like it was any other Tuesday—pulling on her jeans, slipping her feet into her UGGs, already thinking about what she might eat for lunch afterward. I drove her to the hospital, watching her scroll through her phone.

But afterwards—afterwards was different.

She hurt more than she expected. The first thing she said when she woke up was, “The doctor lied to me. He said I would just be sore. But this is ... pain.” Real pain. Adult pain. The kind that doesn’t respond to ice cream or gentle words.

I watched my daughter’s face change over those next few days. Not just from the procedure, but from the shock of her own naivety. She couldn’t walk normally—had to waddle, favoring one side. She felt awkward in public, self-conscious about how she moved. Sleep became elusive, nights filled with shifting positions to find comfort that wouldn’t come. Her body was still processing whatever cocktail of anesthesia and pain medication was working its way through her system.

She had given a piece of herself without truly understanding what she was giving, and now she was learning that good intentions don’t soften the blade. That love costs exactly what it costs, no matter how willingly you pay.

Shabbir, too, was vulnerable in a way I had never seen. He was terrified, worn down, utterly raw. He looked at me as if I were the only solid thing left in the room.

And in the middle of it all, I had my thirteen-year-old son to think of—a boy full of video games and e-bikes and endless text threads. We joked that he had become a digital hologram, visible only when we powered down the router. So one day, we did. A forced, reluctant detox.

Something surprising happened. He stepped into the room. Not just physically, but emotionally.

He learned to flush Shabbir’s central line, pushing saline through the clear plastic tubing with careful hands. He helped administer medication. He made his father laugh—real laughs, not the polite ones we’d all been practicing. We started calling him The Nurse, half-teasing, half-astonished. It was like watching a boy stumble into manhood by accident, and then choose, quietly, to stay a while.

As his mother, I wanted to preserve his right to drift through this summer unburdened by adult fear. But I also needed him to feel the gravity of what was unfolding around him, to understand that this was not background noise, but something that required his presence not as a bystander, but as a witness. His father’s life could not be just another tab to close, another notification to swipe away.

There’s no manual for how to manage your children’s emotions while your husband is undergoing a transplant with your daughter’s marrow. No playbook for how to preserve their safety and still teach them reverence.

No one tells you that love will require this much choreography.

Work That Counts, and Work That Doesn’t

In the stillness before the transplant, I tried to work. Not out of discipline, but out of desperation. I wanted to leave a mark of myself before I disappeared again.

This is the myth we live inside: that our value lies in output, in visible achievement, in things we can quantify. Hustle culture is a kind of secular theology now. It whispers that your worth is whatever you’ve most recently produced.

Even sacred labor begins to feel like waste.

This week, the chemo triggered a new complication. Shabbir’s bladder lining stopped regenerating, and it began to shed. He was in agony, unable to sit still for more than twenty minutes before rushing to the bathroom. I was managing it in pieces: pain meds, water bottles, cleaning up after him, scanning for blood in places it shouldn’t be.

Then the phone rang.

I stepped into the hallway to take it. Amina and I hadn’t spoken in weeks. She asked how I was holding up. I gave her the outline—the medical details, the logistics, the exhaustion. I was talking fast, the way you do when you’re trying to get through the facts without falling into them.

Then, almost offhandedly, she said, “You know, when you give for God, it finds its way back to you. Maybe not here. Maybe later. Maybe in your career. Or through the kids.”

It wasn’t a pep talk. Just a plain sentence. But it landed like a message, like something I was meant to hear in that exact moment. A thread from one world to another. That maybe the parts of yourself you pour out now don’t disappear but transform, returning later in different clothes.

I went back inside and found Shabbir folded into the sheets, trembling slightly as each wave of pain passed through him. I stood there for a moment, watching him, and felt something shift—not the weight itself, but my relationship to carrying it.

Maybe Amina was right. Maybe the parts of myself I was pouring out weren’t disappearing but transforming, the way water becomes steam: invisible, but not gone.
